How to move people to action…
I am working in tech and I get stuff done by me or my team. Recently, I stepped into a role that needs more collaboration and management skills. Luckily, I have just completed a course called Communicating for Impact by McKinsey. I feel like it is helpful to share my thoughts on it from a Dev perspective.
Why — the Purpose
Communication is moving people to action…, to deploy a way to
- Make yourself more effective
- Help your team to gain better performance
What — the Methods
The Pyramid Principle
How to build a pyramid? You should build a pyramid bottom up
- Make sure your initiatives have no gaps or overlaps
- Group them in some buckets
- synthesize them into one sentence
How to explain your pyramid to others? Explain your pyramid top down
- Start with your governing thoughts
- Go through the key points
- Drill through the details if needed
How to link your element into one story? You could simply list them as one, two, three, etc. Alternatively, you can link your elements to the situation-problem-solution mode.
My Tips
- Email: A clear subject, put your main message at the top, and followed by a list of key points, and leave details at the end.
- Slack: No more
hi
are you there
have a min to chat
. Leave your message and worth mentioning details directly. Help your colleagues get the information they need when they have the time. - Meetings: Prepare your pyramid beforehand, start with your main points. You may or may not need to go through all the key points, tailor it according to your audience.
